Recaps of 2010

I did a number of the things on my 2010 list of lovely things - see them here before they get updated for 2011. I got to complete 41 our of 50 on my list with a few things being delayed because of my fall (Sean did get his banana cream pie but I couldn't help Grandma make it).

As for my crafty resolutions, I did pretty well, as long as we don't count the projects list. And all the activity seemed to happen in the first half of last year (see mid year update). I'm still working on a list for 2011 so that I have a meaningful list and also one that I can accomplish. I'm definitely leaving projects off the list. It seems a project put on the list never gets done. Maybe I should try some reverse psychology and make a list of projects to not finish.

What are on your lists this year?

Mid-year Review: 2010 Crafty Resolutions

Time to check my progress and update some items on my 2010 Crafty Resolution list.

----------

1) Catalog all current UFOs from past years - decide what to frog, what to finish and what to throw out

This happened - yay! - so now all that I have on my hooks and needles are current, going-to-be-finished projects. The only downside is that there are soooo many going-to-be-finished projects for the rest of the year.

Let's see what will and will not get done this year as planned and what has been added to the list.

2) Projects for 2010:
This probably isn't going to happen in 2010 given the other projects I'm working on. But I'm still very happy to have kit.
  • Three baby blankets using the same pattern but different color combinations
Completed! See 1, 2 and 3. I've even started a fourth baby blanket with the same pattern.
Added to the list are blankets for the Mistress and for Perches. (I know, Perches, you wanted socks. But you so coveted the blanket at MS&W that I'm making you your own. You can have socks next year.) All three blankets are started and underway. I knew I'd have to make them at the same time, adding only 1 or 2 skeins per blanket then switching to another blanket so that I didn't finish one and then not want to work on the others.
It went from being a gift for her summer birthday to being a gift for Christmas. I should be able to get it done.
  • Make at least 3 pairs of socks
One pair is done - the blue socks for Sean. I've got plans for two other pairs, one as a Christmas gift and one for myself. I've got hope for both pairs since the blankets I'm making will be too large to take with me during my commute. The sock projects are much more portable.

3) Get serious about starting side business, to include:
  • Create own web site
I changed the blog address to reflect the new name. I decided against having to pay for a domain name right now given the free stuff out there, like Blogger.
  • Get a business plan in order
Planned, written, and working on it.

  • Open an Etsy shop
  • Create some inventory for the shop
Opened but nothing in there at the moment. I doubt I'll have anything there by the end of the year.
  • Add new patterns to my Ravelry shop
While I've jotted down a bunch of ideas, new patterns have not yet been written.
The Sheep and Shenanigans shirts do count - though they were made for me to buy. I'm sure I can come up with a few ideas to add before the end of the year.

4) Join the crochet guild or knitting guild or something

In March, I joined the CGOA. I'm planning to join the knitting guild in the next couple of years after I get my crochet career on track.

5) Fiber Traveling
  • Go to MS&W 2010
Awesome, as always.

  • Go to another fiber festival besides MS&W. Virginia? Rhinebeck? Stitches?
This one is still up in the air. Perches - when is the festival near your house?

  • Check out TNNA (if I can)
I found out I could not attend since I was not a professional. But - I just applied to become an associate crochet professional through CGOA. I'm hoping this will be my ticket to be able to attend TNNA next year.

Done and done. And I can't wait to go again next year.

6) Take a crafty class - cake decorating (final class), sewing, knitting, spinning, painting, sculpture - something! Could also count if I take a class at an LYS or at a conference

My attendance at the Professional Development Day could count toward this. I'll mark it off twice by completing the CGOA Masters Course, which I hope to finish by the end of August.

------------

I am very happy with my resolution progress to date! I'm also very excited at what the rest of the year will bring. How is your year coming along? Please share your triumphs and successes in the comments.

Different...but Sorta the Same...

Welcome! Glad you made the switch from the old blog to the new one. (Or if you just stumbled upon the site, welcome to you, too!)

Not that it is really a new blog - it's the same blog, just with a different name, new address and new logo. And the same crazy crafter at the helm.

The reason for the change comes from my pursuit to make my crafting - from designs to handmade goods to contracted crocheting and knitting - into a real business. A very small, unprofitable business to start, but a business nonetheless. While a logo and new blog wasn't specifically outlined, it's still part of my crafty resolutions for 2010.

I should note that in addition to the blog address and name changing, so has my Ravelry name - I'm no longer CrochetCommuter --> I'm now OnHooksandNeedles. My email address will also change - but that may take awhile until it's official. I need to make sure I update a ton of registrations with the new address.

The logo you see had been in my mind for a few years. It is the name of the yarn store I hope to own someday. Until that happens, it will serve well as my online business - for the blog, Ravelry and Etsy. It was created by a friend of mine who took my rudimentary sketch and make a great graphic out of it. Her name is Sarah and if you're looking for a great graphic designer who understands the needs of the fiber fanatics, check out her web site at www.pricedes.com/Price_Design.html. I also need to thank my close friends who provided some excellent and honest feedback of the logo drafts. I love the finished product! What do you think?

I was able to export the posts from the other blog to here which is great - except that none of the shortcuts to previous posts will work. So if you find broken links in past posts - sorry about that. I'm not going to go back and fix them all. The old blog will stay up for a while with a link to the new site. I'll be slowly deleting old posts from it but as mentioned earlier, those posts now reside here.

With the new logo will also come some marketing items which I hope to pass out at the Knit and Crochet show in July. If I can get them made in time, I may also have a few to hand out at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.

So stay tuned for more developments and changes. I appreciate greatly those who read the blog, like my patterns, leave comments and otherwise let me know that there is an audience out there that enjoys my ramblings. I hope you like the new blog (or it eventually grows on you). Your comments/suggestions are always welcome.

March is National Crochet Month!

In honor of March being National Crochet Month, and to cross off an item on my Crafty Resolutions list, I joined the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA). I'll eventually add the logo to the blog and in the meantime, I'll be wearing my CGOA pin with pride.

I'm looking forward to what membership with CGOA will do for me in regards to my crocheting and my crochet/crafty networking.

Fiber Travels

Plans for an item on my crafty resolutions list have been made!

The 2010 Knit and Crochet Show will take place in Manchester, NH July 8-10 with the CGOA Professional Development Day on July 7. With creative measures, I found I will have enough leave to take the week off to attend. Registration for classes opens on March 3rd but I'm not sure if I'll spend the money to take any, unless something looks too good to miss.

If anyone has attended this show before, please share your experiences and advice for this newbie.

Solicited Advice

As noted in my crafty resolutions for this year, some changes are brewing here at the blog. I've been thinking about moving from Blogger to WordPress but I'm still on the fence. While the change could be fun (new features and designs) it could also be a pain (a lot of work to set up, new platform to learn, links to past posts won't work, might lose readers).

To move or not to move, that is the question.

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

2010 Crafty Resolutions

Here is my list of crafty New Year resolutions for 2010. Unlike other years, this is a shorter list but many of the items require a LOT of work. Here we go, in no particular order:

1) Catalog all current UFOs from past years - decide what to frog, what to finish and what to throw out

2) Projects for 2010:

3) Get serious about starting side business, to include:

4) Join the crochet guild or knitting guild or something

5) Fiber Traveling

6) Take a crafty class - cake decorating (final class), sewing, knitting, spinning, painting, sculpture - something! Could also count if I take a class at an LYS or at a conference

I'll try to revisit the list as the year progresses and as I (hopefully) progress with the list. Comments/suggestions welcome.

Happy New Year!

I guess I should say, Happy Belated New Year! I hope I'm able to catch up with this year soon as I have many things planned for 2010. My list of crafty resolutions is still taking shape as the plan for how to accomplish my list of personal resolutions is being mapped out. So far it looks like I'm going to tackle 2010 from all angles - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Physically - Not only am I going to work on getting back in shape (my physical form) I'm also going to improve my physical surroundings, such as getting new storage for my yarn and perhaps complete a few sewing projects to decorate the house.

Mentally - I'm going to work on making lists and plans that have clear goals and milestones to accomplish what I want to do. There is too much clutter up in my noggin. This includes getting down on paper and into planning a number of patterns and possibly opening an Etsy store. This also includes trying to find a new job where I feel mentally stimulated and one that doesn't suck the life from me. Something closer to home would be great, too.

Emotionally - Emotionally, I'm good. I've got the best husband ever so no worries there. It's just getting the other things - physically, mentally and spiritually - in order to reduce unnecessary stress and keep my emotional status in check (i.e. not resort to drama-queen reactions. As I learned in October, I am NOT low-key).

Spiritually - Whatever spiritual path you follow or beliefs you hold (or don't hold), that's up to you. I was fortunate enough to find my path many years ago but I've been disconnected from it for a few years now. The daily grind can do that to you if you don't make time for yourself or for important activities. I'm hoping in 2010 to reconnect with my beliefs and my path. The spinners are still spinning and it is in my best interest to pay attention to what is going on. They have a way of giving good hints as to what they are up to so that you can be prepared for what is coming.

Hope your New Year is off to a great start! (or at least a great plan)
